3 Tips for Healthier Travelling

With the Thanksgiving holiday, it's a busy travel time for a lot of people. Here are 3 tips we've discovered for healthier travelling:

1. Boost your immune system. Travelling can bring stress, fatigue, exposure to new bacteria, and disrupt your eating and sleep patterns. All of this can lead to getting sick, so it's worth the conscious effort to take care of yourself before hitting the road. Whatever it means for you, give yourself an extra dose of what makes your health thrive (vitamins, more sleep, less booze, quiet time, exercise). Our personal holistic prescription includes increasing our water with lemon & lime intake, eating less sugary foods and more raw/whole foods, as well as resting up before our trip.

2. Use simple breathing to stay relaxed, present and calm. Whether it's getting through the chaos of airport security, dealing with traffic or feeling the vibe of cranky travelers, using simple breathing techniques can help bring more smiles.

The how-to:
Where ever you are, intentionally relax your face muscles and jaw. Begin to focus all of your attention on your breath. Take simple, relaxed breaths. Try to avoid entertaining thoughts of stringent breathing rules or if you're "doing it right." Simply breathe, notice your breath, keep it simple, and watch yourself become calm.

3. Expect the unexpected. Plan is a four letter word, especially with travel. While we all do our best to make plans, if the uninvited creeps in, it feels better to adapt than fight. With most situations, we have the option to ease up on the inner control freak panel, and direct our energy towards understanding how unexpected things are a part of (travel) life. Choosing to not drain your energy on the fight preserves your energy which then gives you the power to find solutions, adapt to situations and see things clearly.

In our last 14 months of travel without a permanent home, we've developed a strong practice of flexibility and adaptability as we frequently get thrown off our planned path. While still remaining positive, we usually expect the unexpected. Sometimes we even dare to laugh at it.

Cheers & Happy Travels,

~Deb
